Understanding Paver Installation Costs

Paver installation costs vary significantly based on the install method, material quality, and project complexity. Our calculator uses rate data from 10 production estimates to give you realistic ranges.

Sand-Set Installation

The most common method for residential patios, pool decks, and walkways. Pavers are laid on a compacted sand bed (gunite sand) with mason sand joints. Labor rates typically range from $1.25–$2.00 per square foot for installation alone.

Mud-Set (Mortar) Installation

Premium method used for pool decks on structure, elevated decks, and porcelain pavers. Uses DOT sand mixed with portland cement (drypack) and Ardex thinset. Labor runs $4.00–$5.50/SF — 3x the cost of sand-set — but provides superior adhesion and longevity.

Permeable Installation

Eco-friendly option using #89 stone bedding and permeable joint sand. Required in some jurisdictions for stormwater management. Installation rates around $1.90/SF with specialized materials.
